What is tarpons football?

Tarpons football is the football program at Port Isabel High School, located in Port Isabel, Texas. The program dates back to 1922, and the team has a long-standing tradition of success on the field.

The team competes in the Texas High School Football League and plays in the 4A classification. The Tarpons compete in District 16-4A, which includes opponents such as Raymondville, Rio Hondo, and La Feria.

Port Isabel has a strong rivalry with nearby Brownsville teams, including Veterans Memorial and Pace.

The team plays their home games at Tarpon Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 5,500 spectators. The stadium features a newly-renovated turf field, state-of-the-art scoreboard, and spacious locker rooms.

The Tarpons have made several playoff appearances throughout their history, including multiple trips to the state championships in the 1970s and 1980s. In recent years, the team has been successful under head coach Jason Strunk, earning a district championship in 2019.

Port Isabel football has produced several notable players, including former NFL players Joe and Bill Hernandez, as well as college standouts like Jaime Escobar and Jonas Ortiz.
